It seems the to-read pile is a self-spawning beast that constantly produces new novels and short story collections for me to wade through. Not that I’m complaining! I’m sure you’ve all seen the shirt that quotes: “Too many books. Too little time.” Sad, but true.
So, what’s in the lineup these days?
1. City of Ruins, by Kristine Kathryn Rusch
2. A Matter of Time, by Glen Cook
3. Hellhole, by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson
4. The Breakout Novelist, by Donald Maass
5. A semi-secret project that I’m sure will delight readers and writers alike once revealed.
6. Shadow’s Lure, by Jon Sprunk
7. The Best Science Fiction & Fantasy of the Year, vol. 5, edited by Jonathan Strahan
8. Falling Machine, by Andrew Mayer
9. The Scarab Path, by Adrian Tchaikovsky
10. Soft Apocalypse, by Will McIntosh
What are you reading? What’s in your pile?
I am appalled with myself. I haven't even heard of most of these (except The Breakout Novelist, by Maass–I think I've read that one twice.)
Admittedly, some of these aren't quite out yet, and others are freshly so. One benefit of my Speculative Fiction Examiner page is nabbing some advance review copies from time to time. For The Scarab Path, that's an entry in a longer series (Shadows of the Apt) which I recommend for anyone who likes a bit of steampunk, fantasy, and insects.
Oh, and I think you'd really like Diving the Wreck, which is the prequel to City of Ruins.
My to-read pile is always enormous, too. Right now I'm reading… wow, five books? Hah.
Jean-Cristophe Valtat's AURORARAMA
Don Maass's THE BREAKOUT NOVELIST
SO LONG BEEN DREAMING anthology
Mira Grant's FEED
Dean Mayes's THE HAMBLEDOWN DREAM
The Breakout Novelist is marvelous so far. Seems to really condense a lot of his other works and workshops into one big smack in the face (motivational smack, that is).
Feed is one I've heard of but haven't had the chance yet. You'll have to let me know what you think.
